Peterbridge College

Welcome to Peterbridge College

Welcome to Peterbridge College, an IMPAQ-registered tutor centre which provides a safe, caring education environment within which students receive guidance and support to realise their individual academic potential, overcome their personal challenges, and mature into caring, pro-active citizens of our wonderful country.

Peterbridge uses the IMPAQ home-school curriculum (CAPS) as our academic foundation, and our qualified and experienced tutors are committed to developing individualized learning pathways for each student. Our vision of a holistic education programme extends beyond the awareness and knowledge contained in books and other teaching resources. An outstanding feature of our education process is the routine exposure of our students to their environmental and social surroundings, and the integration of the knowledge and awareness gained from this exposure into the formal curriculum.

The underlying philosophy in the Peterbridge education process is care and respect for each other, irrespective of race, colour, creed or any other factors, and active guardianship of our environment.

Peterbridge College is located at the Westlake United Church Trust centre, 48 Westlake Drive Westlake.

It has however come to the attention of the college management that many students have been unable to register for grade eight in the Fish Hoek Valley area. The college has secured a venue, the Sea Scouts Halls in Recreation Road, in very close proximity to Fish Hoek Primary school, and will provide presentations on the 12th and 13th of January 2026 at 10:30 in the morning. Should there be enough interest, Peterbridge College will open a grade eight campus at this venue in Fish Hoek in 2026.

The Curriculum

Peterbridge College caters for students from Grade 8 to Grade 12. The college makes use of the IMPAQ home school curriculum which is CAPS based. Students in grades 8 and 9 follow a fixed curriculum (as for schools in the formal education sector), and tasks, tests and exams are marked by the Peterbridge tutors. These marks are then submitted to IMPAQ, which verifies the progress of a student from one grade to another.

Students registering for grades 10-12 register for four compulsory subjects – English, Afrikaans, Mathematics/Maths Literacy and Life Orientation, and then select three additional subjects from a wide range of options. Peterbridge College provides specialized tutoring support for Tourism, Business Studies, CAT, History, Geography and Life Sciences. The college can offer support for students wishing to take one of the other options offered by IMPAQ, e.g. IT, Hospitality Studies, however these students will need to source qualified external tutors for assessment purposes. Peterbridge College marks grade 10-12 tasks, but tests and exams are scheduled and are uploaded to IMPAQ for marking on the day they are written.

The Environment

The Western Cape is blessed with a biologically diverse environment and our fynbos is recognized as one of the six floristic regions of the world. Our coasts and seas are home to an equally rich biodiversity. It is important that our students have a basic knowledge and awareness of where they live and develop a commitment to conserve their inheritance for future generations. The Peterbridge time-table includes a weekly programme period designed to facilitate regular visits to the marine, fynbos and wetland ecosystems, and to contribute to the conservation of these areas by collecting litter or removing invasive aliens. Students carry identification charts with them, and information gathered on these trips is assimilated into the teaching materials.

Outdoor Activities and Outings

It is important that our students also learn to enjoy the recreational opportunities offered by a clean natural environment. They are taken fishing at Kalk Bay harbour, swimming in the marine pools of St James, Sunny Cove and the beaches of Muizenberg and Fish Hoek and hiking at Silvermine.

Other Activities

The Peterbridge extra-curricular programme is not limited to environmental outings and activities. The cultural programme includes annual visits to the Norval Art Foundation and other places of interest like the Castle and museum. On bad weather days we have great fun in the kitchen learning how to bake bread and make basic meals. At least once a year a school market is held during which students are encouraged to make and sell their own produce. The latter activity is the culmination of an introductory entrepreneurial programme for grade 8 students, who are introduced to computers and assisted with the design of an excel spreadsheet for a micro-business.

The Community

The primary focus of the Westlake United Community Centre, which hosts Peterbridge College, is to service the Westlake community. In addition to PBC, the centre hosts a sewing group, health clinic and library and provides child protection services and trauma counselling. The elderly are provided with exercise programmes and meals twice a week, and in the afternoons, meals are provided for children in need.

Being exposed to the harsh reality of the poor and underprivileged on a daily basis is a critical part of the education process of PBC students. They meet and greet the people who come to the WUCT for support, and begin to understand their circumstances and living conditions. While not directly involved, Peterbridge also contributes to the old age and children’s programmes run by the WUCT as and when appropriate.

The College has introduced a computer orientation course for Grade 7 Westlake Primary School scholars. The course, run by a PBC student on two afternoons a week after school, provides an introduction and much needed typing practice time for Grade 7 students.

The Student

In the formal education sector the focus of the school is very often on academics and sport/ cultural activities. Little time and space is provided for students facing emotional, personal and medical challenges and/or learning disabilities.

The Peterbridge College staff are acutely aware of any individual challenges facing our students and are encouraged to discuss any issues or sudden changes in behaviour with the Centre Head and the parents as soon as concerns about changes in attitude or behaviour become apparent. Individual grade whatsapp groups ensure that there is a constant communications link between the teachers and parents.

Our small classes enable individual attention and support.

When students have passed through the senior phases of their school career at Peterbridge, they should not only have realised their academic potential, but also have matured into confident, contributing members of society. Free to pursue their own careers, but cognisant that they are ultimately reliant on society and duty bound to contribute as they are able – as epitomised by the dolphin in our logo.

The underlying philosophy of Peterbridge College is that the school should function as a microcosm of the wider community.

We are non-denominational and our operational ethos is underpinned by two basic principles as encapsulated in our logo: We Care for the Earth and We Care for Each Other.
